We decided to escape the heat
by driving downtown with our new picnic basket for a snack at Seaport Village. You know – cool ocean breeze, shade tree etc. It was 101 in downtown San Diego. It wasn’t really too bad by the bay, though. With the strong breeze and in the shade it was tolerable.

Getting back to RB was a shocker. 113 degrees. That ties a personal record for us in SoCal. It was 113 the day Reuben flew from California to Baltimore for his first semester at Johns Hopkins. The difference between then and now is that today the wind is blowing from the ocean. Back those many years ago it was a desert wind.

  1. And at about 2:40 PM, right after making this post, our power went out, with the temperature at 113. It just came back on at 10:10 pm. Grim day.

  2. Is this why when we’ve visited before we did so in February and March? Turn down the thermostat before August 15, ok? 🙂

  3. Didn’t mean to be anonymous…’twas me. And why is there no desert wind now? Because there’s so much building, no desert is left?

  4. I’m not a meteorologist but the idea is that if there is a desert wind it gets hot here. If they happen in January, the weather overnight becomes the best on the planet. If it happens in summer, it is unbearable.

There is and always will be plenty of desert. It is just that this week (this month actually) even though the breeze (even though it is weak) is coming from the west, it is still hot.

Hopefully it will get back to normal by mid August.
